KAPTN KEN                     Lighthouses in Arizona?  You bet!

There is no ocean shoreline as a boundry around the State ofArizona, but there are lakes and one of them, Lake Havasu, does have lighthouses.  In fact there are six of them at the moment with possibly more planned in the near future, we have chosen to illustrate four of them here. The lighthouses are one quarter or one third size and are excelent copies of real lighthouses that exist in the U.S.     They are  located on the great Colorado River, and placed in strategic locations mostly around the peninsula that has been converted to an island by the London Bridge channel built in 1971.  They really perform the task of "Aids to Navigation" guiding ships in and around the lake and London Bridge. The island is home to several RV parks, motels and marinas and attracts many vacationers to the beautiful blue waters each year. In addition there is Lake Havasu City on the main land with more motels, shops and an international airport.

Cape Hatteras is on the North Carolina coast on the

Atlantic Ocean. This is a replica with its characteristic

black and white spirals which allow it to be recognised

by ships passing along the coast in the daylight and is

called a daytime marker.  Nightime recognition is done

a powerful lamp inside a Fresnel lens system.

The original Currituck Beach lighthouse is located on

the Outer Banks on the North Carolina coast  facing the Atlantic

Ocean and is recognised in the daytime by its characteristic

red color.

This lighthouse, like many others in the U.S. it has a powerful

light inside a large Fresnel lens that can be seen twenty miles

out to sea.

This replica is tailored after the famous Split Rock lighthouse on the shore of

Lake Superior, built in 1919 at Twin Harbors, Minnesota, it is lit up once a

year to remember the tragic demise of the "Edmond Fitzgerald" ore carying

ship in 1975.

West Quoddy Head lighthouse is located in Lubec, on the coast of Maine.

Built in 1807, it was restored in 2002. This replica stands at the north west

entrance to the Bridgewater Channel. In this picture, you can see in the

background, the half built lighthouse on the north east bank
