KAPTN KEN               Cape Mears                       Lighthouse

                    Oregon

Cape Mears Lighthouse is now part of Cape Mears State Park and can be reached  along the Three Capes Scenic Drive begining in the historic town of Tillamook where the famous cheese factory is located and can be toured.

This lighthouse was constructed in 1890 on a headland named after John Mears, an early seafaring explorer. The cost of the 60 foot tower was $60,000 and took a year to build. This is a first order light but unfortunately a few parts of the lens and clockwork are missing.  The lens was hand crafted in Paris, France and the glass prisms were partially covered with a red glass making the signature alternate red and white flashes. The lighthouse does allow visitors even though the light no longer functions, and there is a gift shop in the stairwell.
