Lighthouse
Oregon
This Most northernly Oregon lighthouse is located on a rock one and a half miles from the shore opposite the Ecola State Park. The early history of the lighthouse reminds us of how difficult it was to build it on this small rock in the unforgiving Pacific ocean. The storm waves would wash right over the structure smashing windows and tearing away railings and superstructures. The lighthouse is now privately owned, has been restored and is serving as a columbarium, where for a fee, creamated ashes of loved ones can be housed. The lighthouse is not open to the public but can easily be viewed from the shore.
Jim Gibbs, the author, was one of the light keepers for twenty years.
